Maritime Landscape Archaeology
1980 - 1986
Scholarly work during 1980-1986 fused earth sciences with archaeology to reconstruct coastal occupation histories and shoreline dynamics, employing radiocarbon dating, sedimentology, and geomorphology alongside wreck preservation data to interpret maritime landscapes. Island archipelago contexts illuminated insular adaptation, biogeography, migration patterns, and networked exchange across island settings. Underwater archaeology and maritime economies revealed shipwrecks and cargoes as evidence of long-distance trade and provisioning networks, while cross-regional syntheses linked Mediterranean and Southeast Asian maritime traditions to shape emerging research agendas. Historical Significance: The integration of underwater excavation methods with hull construction analysis and harbour studies established methodological standards for recording, interpreting, and conserving maritime heritage, and laid foundations for cross-cultural maritime comparative studies.
• Integrated earth sciences and archaeology are used to reconstruct coastal occupation histories and shoreline dynamics, combining radiocarbon dating, sedimentology, and geomorphology with wreck preservation data to interpret maritime landscapes [14], [12], [8], [7], [17], [18].
• Island archipelago contexts and insular adaptation: archaeological programs across island settings illuminate island biogeography, migration and cultural networks, as seen in MRAP Moreton Island, Percy Isles bark canoe work, MOA/Naghi Islands, Comoro Islands, and St Helena studies [1], [6], [2], [5], [16].
• Underwater archaeology and maritime economies: shipwrecks and cargoes reveal exchange networks and economic practices from Bronze Age Britain to Southeast Asia; include Two Bronze Age Cargoes, Pattaya wreck, Basque whaling in Labrador, and broader maritime history syntheses [4], [15], [10], [20].
• Cross-regional maritime historiography and synthesis: comparative studies across Israel and China highlight evolving research agendas, methods, and historiography in maritime contexts [3], [19], [20].
